Fishing Derby

Next Fishing Derby: October 3, 2017

Every year, the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition and partners offer the chance for Akron area elementary school children to fish and learn about environmental stewardship along the Ohio & Erie Canal. The catch-and-release event has sponsored attendance for more than 200 school children each year, providing all of the necessary equipment and volunteer support needed for the children and their families to fish.

If you are interested in sponsoring next year's Fishing Derby, contact George Ebey.

2017 Fishing Derby Review

Rainbow over the 2017 Fishing Derby.

More than 200 students and their families came out to the Wilbeth Road Trailhead in Akron for the annual Cargill Fishing Derby. Light rain didn't deter these young fishers, who caught many a blue gill and the occasional small catfish. After about an hour and a half of fishing, the families were treated to a free picnic lunch, educational opportunities to learn about the Canal, and prizes. Thank you to all of our volunteers, guests, and sponsors for another successful Fishing Derby!
