What is the Fishing Derby?

The Cargill/PNC Bluegill Fishing Derby is an educational “hands-on” event for Akron area school age children that teaches them a new hobby and the importance of environmental stewardship. The event is entirely free and we also provide all of the necessary equipment as well as refreshments at the end of the event.

How does it work?

You can register here. The event is free, though space is limited. When you register, you will choose time-slot. Simply arrive on or slightly before your assigned time-slot. From there, you will join the registration line where you will be provided with your equipment and assigned to fishing station along the canal. You can expect your fishing time to last between 60 to 90 minutes. Once dismissed, you will be directed to the check-out area where you will receive a complimentary goodie bag and your child may keep the fishing pole they were assigned as a free complimentary gift. Volunteers will be on hand to help provide fishing tutorials if needed.

  • Each child MUST BE accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in order to participate in the Fishing Derby.

  • All participants (students and parents/guardians) will be required to wear a mask during the event.

  • Due to limited space, we ask that you register and bring no more than two children during the event.

  • The desired age group is 3rd to 4th grade students (ages 9-11) though you may register other ages.

    • Please note that the equipment provided will be aimed at this age group and may not be ideal for younger or older students.

  • Once you are assigned to your fishing station, we ask that you remain there until dismissed. (restroom breaks are permitted)

  • Because spaces will be provided in shifting timeslots, when your turn is up, we will ask you to stop fishing and proceed to the check-out area to receive your goodie bag so that other participants can utilize your space.

  • Please plan to arrive as close to your assigned time as possible. When in line, please remain at least six feet from others at all times.

  • A temperature check and brief health questionnaire will be administered prior to receiving your equipment and assigned fishing station.

All children and adults must be registered here.
