Our Projects

The Ohio & Erie Canal and Towpath Trail are home to many interesting activities and projects. In addition to our events and programs, the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition leads efforts for a number of projects across Summit, Stark, and Tuscarawas Counties, including the development of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.

The Ohio & Erie Canalway offers an abundance of activities for visitors.

Our organization works throughout communities across the National Heritage Area in fields that range from project management and development to community engagement and awareness. You can learn more about the types of projects we are involved in below, our view our list of major projects to see the impact of our work.

Historical Sites

Throughout the National Heritage Area, from the urban centers to the rural countryside, there are remnants of locks and structures associated with the development and growth of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Visit museums, monuments, and visitor’s centers to learn more about the extensive history of the canal, the surrounding area, and the many cities developed because of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Economic Development

Travel along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and, in addition to picturesque landscapes and wildlife, you will find many local attractions offering a taste of the National Heritage Area’s culture. The Ohio & Erie Canalway  encourages government officials, community volunteers, and businesses to work together to create a collective energy that attracts investment while maintaining a high quality of life. While on the Towpath or traveling through the National Heritage Area, we encourage you to stop and support local businesses along the Ohio & Erie Canal.
