The Ohio & Erie Canal and Towpath Trail are home to many interesting activities and projects. In addition to our events and programs, the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition leads efforts for a number of projects across Summit, Stark, and Tuscarawas Counties, including the development of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail.
Our organization works throughout communities across the National Heritage Area in fields that range from project management and development to community engagement and awareness. The Ohio & Erie Canal, Towpath Trail, surrounding waterways, and connecting trails offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities for visitors to enjoy. Activities include hiking, bicycling, canoeing, bird-watching, horseback-riding, and fishing.
Throughout the National Heritage Area, from the urban centers to the rural countryside, there are remnants of locks and structures associated with the development and growth of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Visit museums, monuments, and visitor’s centers to learn more about the extensive history of the canal, the surrounding area, and the many cities developed because of the Ohio & Erie Canal.
Travel along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and, in addition to picturesque landscapes and wildlife, you will find many local attractions offering a taste of the National Heritage Area’s culture. The Ohio & Erie Canalway encourages government officials, community volunteers, and businesses to work together to create a collective energy that attracts investment while maintaining a high quality of life.
