Join us on a Towpath Trek in 2011
Enjoy the beauty of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and hike or bike four sections of trail for our Annual Towpath Trek! Once you’ve finished all four sections of trail, you’re eligible to receive a dated, commemorative pin to mark the occasion.


Each year the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition likes to get families out and on the Towpath Trail. Our annual Towpath Trek, in partnership with Goodyear, is an easy way to make plans to spend time with your family and have a day out on the Towpath Trail.

Just walk or bike the four listed sections of trail between September 1 and November 30, 2011 and you’re eligible to receive a dated 2011 Towpath Trek Pin to celebrate your accomplishment.

Each year you can add to your collection of Towpath Trek pins as you walk different sections of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail from Cleveland to New Philadelphia.

2011 Towpath Trek Trails Details

Towpath Trek #1 - Leonard Kreiger Canalway Center to Harvard Ave.

Hike or bicycle along the Ohio & Erie Canal within the Cleveland Metro Parks. Begin your trek at the Leonard Kreiger Canalway Center in the City of Cleveland, including restrooms, phone and water. Travel north on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail though the fascinating mix of greenspace and industry that leads to Harvard Ave. Once you reach Harvard Ave., you can return on the same trail. The total distance is 4.6 miles.

Towpath Trek #2 - Botzum Trailhead to Ira Rd. Trailhead

Hike or bicycle north along the Ohio & Erie Canal in Akron from the Botzum trailhead and train station to the Ira Rd. begin your trek at the Botzum Trailhead, which includes restrooms but not water, and head north along the Towpath Trail through old canal locks and relaxing greenspace. Once you reach the Ira Rd. Trailhead, you can return on the same trail. The total distance is 3.8 miles.

Towpath Trek #3 - Mustill Store to Memorial Parkway

Discover the beauty of the Little Cuyahoga River as you hike or bicycle north, alongside the rushing water. This section of the river was also part of the Canalway, and you can still see remnants of the cascade locks if you look south from the Mustill Store. Instead of following the Cascade Locks, however, head north along the trail to Memorial Parkway and enjoy the lovely greenspace that has been created next to the bustling city of Akron. The total distance is 2 miles.

Towpath Trek #4 - John Glenn Grove to Oak Knoll Park

Discover the beauty of the Tuscarawas River Valley as you hike or bicycle along the remains of the Ohio & Erie Canal from the John Glenn Grove Trailhead near Massillon. Park at the John Glenn Grove Trailhead, and travel north on the Towpath Trail to Oak Knoll Park, and return on the same trail. Along the way, you will view remnants of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Once you reach Oak Knoll Park, take a moment to study the historic bridge and enjoy the peaceful grove of oak trees. The total distance is 6 miles.
