Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Zoarville

Working with the Tuscarawas County Canal Lands Committee the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition was awarded a “Clean Ohio” grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission to purchase 71 acres of land to extend the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail to Route 800 near Zoarville. The support of the county commissioners, local governments, Tuscarawas County Parks Department, local community groups, local foundations and donors, made this project possible.

This property will allow for the completion of an additional section of the 101-mile Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail running from Cleveland to New Philadelphia, connecting cities and villages in Tuscarawas County to cities and villages in Stark, Summit and Cuyahoga Counties. The 71 acres of land is situated in a flood plain area along the Tuscarawas River and is part of the Tuscarawas County Trail and Green Space Plan. Preserving this land will maintain a healthy functioning flood plain and the diverse habitat, providing vernal pools for amphibian breeding.

Currently, work has begun on the trail here and volunteers are needed to help build it! The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition are building the boardwalks for the trail over the wetlands and need your help. If you are interested, please contact George at gebey@ohioeriecanal.org.
